Thai Massage is part of the four-fold traditional medical system of Thailand (the others are herbal medicine, nutritional medicine, and spiritual practices). For centuries it was the monks who practiced this healing tradition in Thailand. Thai medicine shares features with Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine, including the concepts of energy flow through pathways of the body. This style of bodywork emphasizes the mind/body connection and has been utilized in the treatment of physical, emotional and spiritual disorders. The main techniques of Thai Massage include the application of stretching and pressure throughout the whole body to stimulate energy flow. Thai Massage is often called Thai Yoga Massage because the therapist uses his or her body to move the client into a series of stretches similar to Yoga. It is performed on a mat and utilizes the thumbs, fingers, forearms, elbows, palms, knees, legs, and feet for stretching, massage and pressure techniques, joint mobilization and muscle compression. Thai Massage is a very active and energizing, yet deeply relaxing experience for both the practitioner and the client. Once the client has relaxed, the practitioner, with a heightened sensitivity, stretches the client to his or her comfortable limit. A high level of significance is attributed to the abdominal region. According to Thai Medicine, all the major energy pathways of the body have their origin in the vicinity of the navel. Therefore, the abdominal massage techniques are a crucial component of the healing benefit of this training. Thai Massage is performed on a floor mat and utilizes the thumbs, fingers, forearms, elbows, and palms for massage and pressure techniques. In this course, you will discover the main features of Thai medicine including the concepts of energy flow through pathways of the body. The main manual applications of pressure and stretching will be presented and practiced. The stretching often takes the form of double or assisted Yoga. Students learn to perform a full body Thai Massage. Techniques for the supine, side-lying, and prone positions are included. This course also includes yoga warm-ups and meditation at the start of each class. Instructor: Attila Pegan. Attila’s journey as a massage practitioner began in 1999 in his native country of Hungary. He completed a 770 hour massage training program in Hungary that consisted of over 500 hours of medical massage. He worked in a clinical setting at the Hungarian Institute of Rheumatology and Physiotherapy, which is a highly regarded hospital in Hungary. In 2002 Attila traveled to Thailand and completed all 6 levels of the International Thai Massage School in Chiang Mai. He then moved to Minnesota, his wife’s home. In 2005 he founded Asokananda's Sunshine Network and completed advanced training with Andrea Baglioni and Laurino Bertelli in Montreal, Canada. In 2006, he began teaching Thaiyogamassage. After a year he traveled to Thailand to do his teacher training at Lahu Village. Upon his return, Attila organized and taught beginner Thaiyogamassage workshops. Attila is approved as a Continuing Education Provider by NCBTMB and maintains a busy clinical and teaching practice with his wife in Savage, Minnesota. ^Top^ Therapeutic Bodywork for Special Populations CP#6300 Mondays, April 30 - August 13 • 6:00 - 10:00 pm

Total Hours: 16 NCBTMB: 16 CE Hours Prerequisites: This course is ideal for anyone trained in bodywork, manual therapies, or fitness professionals, including massage and bodywork therapists, athletic trainers, and physical therapists. Please bring two sheets, 1 pillowcase, and 1 bath towel. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing such as athletic shorts or sweats suitable for stretching. No jeans, dresses, skirts, etc. The Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) method of muscle lengthening and fascial release is a type of Athletic Stretching that provides effective, dynamic, facilitated stretching of major muscle groups, but more importantly, AIS provides functional and physiological restoration of superficial and deep fascial planes.
Over the past few decades many experts have advocated that stretching should last up to 60 seconds. For years, this prolonged static stretching technique was the gold standard. However, prolonged static stretching actually decreases the blood flow within the tissue creating localized ischemia and lactic acid buildup. This can potentially cause irritation or injury of local muscular, tendinous, lymphatic, as well as neural tissues, similar to the effects and consequences of trauma and overuse syndromes.
The Mattes AIS Technique is an effective treatment for deep and superficial fascial release, restoring proper fascial planes for optimal physiologic function. Performing an Active Isolated Stretch of no longer than 2.0 seconds allows the target muscle to optimally lengthen without triggering the protective stretch reflex and subsequent reciprocal antagonistic muscle contraction as the isolated muscle achieves a state of relaxation. These stretches provide maximum benefit and can be accomplished without opposing tension or resulting trauma.
The Mattes Method of A.I.S. is a myofascial release technique, which incorporates AIS, uses active movement and reciprocal inhibition to achieve optimal flexibility. Using a 2.0 second stretch has proven to be the key in avoiding reflexive contraction of the antagonistic muscle. Without activating muscle group contraction, restoration of full range of motion and flexibility can be successfully achieved.
Active Isolated Stretching 1 focuses applying the Mattes AIS Technique to the upper body. Participants will receive a book and a stretching rope.
Instructor: Roger McNear CPT-ACE, NIHS.
Active Isolated Stretching 2 focuses applying the Mattes AIS Technique to the lower body. Participants will receive a book and a stretching rope.
Instructor: Roger McNear CPT-ACE, NIHS. Roger McNear is a native Minnesotan who developed a love for endurance sports in the early 1970's when he began distance bicycle riding and skiing marathon distances. In the mid 1970's Roger began teaching fitness and wellness. As more and more people inquired into personal training services with him, he obtained certification through the American Council on Exercise as a Personal Trainer. Roger is also a member of the American College of Sports Medicine. Soon Roger was taking classes from his mentor, Aaron Mattes, developer of Active Isolated Stretching (A.I.S). Recognizing the amazing restorative and healing benefits of AIS, Roger began teaching AIS, and has done so for years. He maintains a private practice in Cambridge, MN.

Craniosacral Techniques for Asian Bodywork CP#653 Saturday & Sunday, May 5 & 6 • 9:00 am – 5:00 pm Register by April 20 Tuition: $224 Total Hours: 14 Hours NCBTMB: 14 CE Hours (Meets the requirement of 2 hours of Standard V: Roles & Boundaries) Prerequisites: Prior training in Asian bodywork. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a sheet and face covers for a face crescent, or a pillowcase. Recommended reading: Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy by Franklyn Sills, Shiatsu Anma Long and Short Forms, by Dr. Doann Kaneko.
When patterns of imbalance become deeply entrenched, standard treatment strategies do not always apply. In chronic illness there is a complex interweaving of health and pathology which demands a nuanced approach that addresses both subtle and gross anatomy. In this workshop, students will learn to combine the sophisticated theoretical and technical repertoire of Asian bodywork with the deep listening and subtle palpation skills of craniosacral therapy. The goal is for students to develop a deeper appreciation for the body’s healing process ‘as it happens’ as well as the skills to directly support and encourage that process in areas of stagnation or difficulty. We will also take a careful look at assessment, treatment planning, and the long term healing process, and gain hands on experience treating key structures and organ systems.

The Value of Ethics CP#656 Friday, October 12 • 6:00 – 9:00 pm
Register by Sept 28 Tuition: $54 (or included for a discount with the course “Dimensional Massage Therapy”. See below)
Total Hours: 3 NCBTMB: 3 CE Hours Prerequisites:This course is open to all health professionals or students enrolled in a therapeutic bodywork program. Ethics is a part of philosophy which deals with systematic approaches to moral issues and problems. As a practitioner entering a profession, you are invested with the responsibility to adhere to the standards of ethical practice and conduct set by the profession and taught in schools. Professional relationships create the need for boundaries that are the outside edges that we must uphold. Boundaries give us the freedom to work in a clear atmosphere of scope of practice, utilizing our code of ethics, education, and often, good sense. The reality of practice is that ethical dilemmas often are unexpected but absolutely do happen. With acceptance and popularity comes the lure to use massage therapy for actual illegal and evil intent. When did pretend kidnapping, theft, fake schools and fraud get launched in the massage therapy profession? If we do not have good body mechanics and hurt ourselves, should we just go ahead and sue our employer when we get hurt? A visit to the “Dark Side” will show why developing and revisiting our ethical codes is a necessary responsibility beyond our initial education. Ethics evolve with a profession and therefore need to be continually explored, discussed, defined, and ultimately valued. This class will include the philosophy and science of ethics and its relationship to massage therapy. You will explore and discuss methods on how to keep the value of ethics in the massage and bodywork therapy profession. Instructor: Nancy W. Dail, BA, LMT, NCTMB has been a professional massage therapist since 1974 and is still in private practice. She is the founder and director of the COMTA accredited program at the Downeast School of Massage (DSM) in Waldoboro, Maine since 1980. A leader in her field, Nancy presents workshops internationally, is certified in Orthopedic and Sports Massage, and has developed the working philosophy of Dimensional Massage as lead author in Kinesiology for Manual Therapies published by McGraw-Hill. Her BA in Health, Arts, and Science from Goddard College helps her balance her administrative duties as Director with teaching Dimensional Massage, Advanced Skills, Kinesiology, Ethics and related subjects at DSM. ^Top^

As a bodywork therapist, what is the number 1 complaint of your clients? Pain and discomfort of musculo-skeletal head, neck, and shoulder conditions caused by injuries, repetitive actions, heredity, poor posture and sleep positions are the biggest reasons why millions of people seek massage and bodywork therapy. This workshop will use a dimensional approach to explore, evaluate and treat a variety of common difficult head, neck and shoulder conditions. Nancy will lecture on the skeletal and muscular anatomy of the head, neck and shoulders. She will also address the specific etiologies, signs and symptoms related to the pathologies of this area. Special attention will be given to the history and exam findings that would warrant professional health care referrals. She will present headache categories, trigger points, and referred pain patterns. Nancy will demonstrate techniques used in Dimensional Massage Therapy and provide supervision for hands-on practice by participants. Dimensional Massage Therapy techniques are deep tissue strokes and methods that have been designed to balance joints by working on the muscles that produce, assist in, or oppose the actions of, or stabilize the joint. Careful attention will be given to the execution of these techniques, specific muscles and their idiosyncrasies, and to the individual structure of the receiving person on the table. Enroll in this course and discover the significant benefit your clients will experience by integrating Dimensional Massage Therapy into your practice. Instructor: Nancy W. Professionals who are caregivers are also welcome.
Please bring writing materials and wear loose, comfortable clothing.
As caregivers we know the importance of giving from the heart, and taking time to care for ourselves. But what happens when we've given what we can and the normal self-care practices don't deliver? How can we find our center again after overextending? Within the human heart there are deep wells of wisdom and strength that become available when we know how to access them. Bodyworkers, therapists, nurses, and those caring for family members will find this workshop helpful in the search for answers to key questions such as: Why do I give? What do I need, expect, and ask for in return? What is the source of my resilience? What causes me to lose touch with it? And how can I become more resilient? Writing exercises, meditations, movement, and partner work will ground an inquiry into the nature of giving and receiving, engaging and letting go, effort and ease. The body feels; the mind believes; the heart knows. The Healer's Heart brings these three realms together to help you find the personal resource, fulfillment, and meaning that are critical to successful long-term caregiving.
Instructor: Chandler Yorkhall, NCTMB has been practicing qigong, bodywork and meditation for over 15 years. He is a graduate of Centerpoint's Shiatsu Therapy program, where he has been a faculty member since 2005.
