Thai Massage is part of the four-fold traditional medical system of Thailand. For centuries it was the monks who practiced Thai Massage as one component of Thai medicine. The main techniques of Thai Massage include the application of stretching and pressure throughout the whole body to stimulate energy flow. Thai Massage is often called Thai Yoga Massage because the therapist uses his or her body to move the client into a series of stretches similar to Yoga. It is performed on a mat and utilizes the thumbs, fingers, forearms, elbows, palms, knees, legs, and feet for stretching, massage and pressure techniques, joint mobilization and muscle compression. Thai Massage is a very active and energizing, yet deeply relaxing experience for both the practitioner and the client. Clients love the variety that Thai Massage adds to bodywork sessions.

In Thai Massage Part I, you will discover the main features of Thai medicine including the concepts of energy flow through pathways of the body. The main manual applications of pressure and stretching throughout the body will be presented and practiced. The stretching often takes the form of double or assisted Yoga. You will learn to perform a full body Thai Massage. Techniques for the supine, side-lying, and prone positions are included. This course also includes yoga warm-ups and meditation at the start of each class.

In Thai Massage Part II, participants will expand upon the basic sequence learned in Thai Massage Part I while adding greater depth through a variety of advanced techniques including techniques for seated position. You will be introduced to and integrate the concepts of Ayurvedic medicine, including the Doshas and energetic pathways. You will learn how to appropriately apply Thai Massage for specific outcomes.

Jin Shin Jyutsu is a physio-philosophy that provides us with a deeper understanding or our Self. It teaches us that we create our own reality through our reactions and attitudes. Emotions, attitudes, and beliefs are stored in the Mind/Body, and release allows us to feel greater peace and freedom, while moving toward our highest potential. Jin Shin Jyutsu provides us with tools to help us know ourselves and move beyond our limiting attitudes and their consequent disharmonies into a peaceful gratitude of what is. Emotional upsets and attitudes can be harmonized by techniques using the fingers. Participants will learn a daily sequence for balancing and revitalizing oneself. This includes numerous techniques that will be demonstrated and practiced in class. JSJ is gentle, pleasant to do, and highly effective as a self-care technique.

Instructor: Emily Evenson, NCTMB, has been teaching with CenterPoint, and with Northern Lights School of Massage Therapy for almost two decades. Register by: October 15

Tuition: $295 + $80 materials fee

Prerequisite: This course is ideal for anyone trained in bodywork, manual therapies or fitness professionals including massage and bodywork therapists, Athletic Trainers, etc.

Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) is one of the methods of stretching most used by today's athletes, massage therapists, personal/athletic trainers, and professionals. It is a method of muscle lengthening and fascial release and is a type of athletic stretching that provides effective, dynamic, facilitated stretching of major muscle groups. More importantly, AIS provides functional and physiological restoration of superficial and deep fascial planes. Active Isolated Stretching allows the body to repair itself and also to prepare for daily activity. The Active Isolated Stretching technique involves the method of holding each stretch for only two seconds and allows the target muscle to lengthen without triggering the protective stretch reflex. This method of stretching is also known to work with the body's natural physiological makeup to improve circulation and increase the elasticity of muscle and fascia. Many conditions have been found to respond well to AIS, including scoliosis, patello-femoral syndrome, hip imbalances, leg length imbalance, fallen arches, plantar fasciitis, fibromyalgia, and Parkinson’s disease. Many medical Doctors, Chiropractors, and Physical Therapists have recognized the benefits of AIS. This exciting technique is popular with therapists and clients alike! Participants will learn AIS techniques for the lower body including back, hips and legs. In addition, participants receive books, a stretching rope, and the course manual.

Instructor: Roger McNear is a native Minnesotan who developed a love for endurance sports in the early 1970's when he began distance bicycle riding and skiing marathon distances. In the mid 1970's Roger began teaching fitness and wellness. As more and more people inquired into personal training services with him, he obtained certification through the American Council on Exercise as a Personal Trainer. Roger is also a member of the American College of Sports Medicine. Soon Roger was taking classes from his mentor, Aaron Mattes, developer of Active Isolated Stretching (A.I.S). Recognizing the amazing restorative and healing benefits of AIS, Roger began teaching AIS, and has done so for years. He maintains a private practice in Cambridge, MN.

East West Sports Massage     CP#621

Wednesdays, May 3 & 10, 2010 • 6:00 - 10:00 pm
Register by April 30

Tuition: $128
Materials Fee: $3 + tax

Total Hours: 8
NCBTMB: 8 CE hours

Prerequisites: Completion of training in Therapeutic Massage and Shiatsu Therapy (or an ABT equivalent), Physiology, and TCM theory.

Participant Preparation: Please bring 2 sheets, 2 towels, 2 hand towels; wear or bring athletic shorts and t-shirt or tank top.

The emphasis of this course is the athlete client who is in consistent, long-term, intensive training for his/her event. Competitive athletes have special bodywork needs above and beyond the casual or fitness-oriented person, and benefit immensely from regular bodywork. An East West blend of bodywork styles is the ideal solution to deal with the inevitable training injuries and wear-and-tear on the body, while supporting the overall energetic system with shiatsu points. Effective Western approaches include myofascial release, trigger point, and neuromuscular therapy. Shiatsu assessment and the use of meridians and points helps balance and strengthen the body's qi and blood, and prevent deficiencies that can develop from intensive training. The psychology of the competitive athlete will be reviewed and discussed, and participants will work with a variety of case histories to develop bodywork plans that incorporate appropriate techniques from both massage and shiatsu.

Instructor: Sunny Cooper, M.S., M.Ed., Dipl.ABT was the sports massage and shiatsu therapist for the Gayle Hatch Olympic Weightlifting Team in Baton Rouge Louisiana from 1990 - 1994. The “baby boomer” generation is savvy about the benefits of bodywork and has become one of the largest demographic groups taking advantage of bodywork in the U.S. A blend of massage and shiatsu is perfect to address common muscle and joint discomforts of the older client, while nourishing the Qi and Blood through the use of acupoints. Older clients frequently have multiple medical problems, so it is important to take a careful history and be mindful of appropriate techniques for each individual. The emotional, psychological, and social implications of aging are a key factor in a person's well-being. Some clients may need to be treated in wheelchairs or in bed, and techniques can be adapted for these situations. The bodywork therapist may be working with family members or with a health care team in the overall care of the aging client. Emphasis will be on developing original and creative sessions based on work from both Western and Eastern styles.

Instructor: Dona McGlennen, RN, CNP, Cert. ABT, Dipl Ac. Dona is a gerontological nurse practitioner and an acupuncturist who is passionate about bodywork. She has extensive training in the healing arts and is certified in massage therapy, shiatsu therapy, CranioSacral therapy and is a reiki master. Lymph Drainage Massage       CP#3305

Thursdays, May 6 – August 12, 2010 • 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Register by April 20

Tuition: $720
Materials: $45 + tax

Total Hours: 45 Hours
NCBTMB: 45 CE hours

Prerequisites: For this advanced bodywork training, participants must have completed 120 hours of bodywork technique instruction and 90 hours of human anatomy and physiology. Knowledge and ability of Swedish massage strokes, draping, lubricants, and body mechanics are assumed.

Participant Preparation: Please bring two twin-size sheets, one pillowcase, and a bath towel.

Lymph Drainage Massage uses light-touch massage strokes to move excess lymphatic fluid (edema) out of the body’s tissues and spaces and into the lymph system, where it can be purified and transported for recirculation or elimination. Lymphatic massage has significant therapeutic benefits for many types of clients, including those who have had recent surgery, soft tissue injury, cancer survivors, stress and tension, “traveler’s edema” and others. Lymph massage is very relaxing and helpful for stress reduction, as it activates the parasympathetic nervous system. This course begins with a detailed study of the lymphatic system. Concepts of lymphatic massage, including watersheds, assessment, indications & contraindications, and directions of movement are introduced. You will learn and practice the basic hand techniques of Lymph Drainage Massage and how these techniques are applied to the various body regions throughout the body. As a bodywork therapist, you will learn self-massage techniques for self care.

Lymph Drainage Massage is highly beneficial for clients with edema, acne and other skin conditions, clients seeking stress reduction and deep relaxation, for post-surgery/ post-mastectomy clients, and individuals making major lifestyle changes. Because this lymph massage does not require the use of lubricant, it is recommended for clients with chemical sensitivities. This introductory course is excellent to broaden the therapeutic possibilities with your clients.

Instructor: Theresa May, NCTMB, LMT (Arizona), has been practicing and teaching massage and bodywork techniques since 2001. She attended the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts in Scottsdale Arizona, where she later became a teacher and administrator. Her areas of expertise include aromatherapy, reflexology, spa techniques, lymphatic drainage massage, prenatal massage, and therapeutic modalities. Using all of these techniques, she has created protocols for working with Parkinson's disease, stroke, cancer and for those at the end of life.
